Light A Bomb Under Your Kids

If anyone out there knows how to motivate a seven year old girl into doing a little bit of tidying, as opposed to being saddled with the whole lot, then please let me know.

Told my Miss today, that all she needed to do was one little area, which is covered in all her stuff.  I got sighing, I got mucking around, I got slow moving, I got "I need a drink", I got "I need to go toilet", I got "I've got a sore eye", I got frustrated and walked out of the room, saying "Leave it, I'll do it tomorrow, and anything I have to pick up, I'm throwing out!"

Hopefully this has served as enough motivation for her to pick up the things she wants to keep, but I wouldn't be placing any money on it.  She's probably thinking that she's gotten away with it, and is firing up the playstation as I write this.

But I will do what I said and throw things out that she may want to keep.

Just went out and checked, and she is actually making progress with the area I asked her to do.  Which surprises me!

Is there anyone out there in a similar situation as me, who has found the secret to lighting a bomb under their kids and getting them to do what you want straight away?  I could really use some advice on this.

Either through comments in here, or in email is fine since some of you seem to be choosing that way to respond.

  1. I find actually taking their most favorite toy and placing it in the garbage bin (*key word 'placing'*) works a treat.

Sure, it makes me look like a prig, but it is surprisingly effective. My child's room has never been tidier.

  3. Wouldn't work in our bin darl, there's no coming back from that toxic death camp. lol. Just the thought of me throwing out her stuff worked, so it was all good.
